About this event
Surely one of the most unique footraces in the world: race the historic Cog Railway to the summit of Mount Washington. The course starts at the Cog base station in Bretton Woods and follows the path alongside the tracks the whole way up, beginning on dirt and gravel and steepening toward Jacob's Ladder, about a 37 percent grade. From there you climb through the boulder fields of the Presidential Range, among the most technical terrain in the country, to the finish on the summit.
The Summit Climb (2.75 miles) includes a Cog train ride back down. The Devil's Shingle Roundtripper (5.5 miles) tags the summit and races back down to the base.
The weather can be extreme: 70s at the base and snow on the summit, with intense wind. A windbreaker or rain shell and an emergency blanket are recommended. No crew or pacers on course; family and friends can meet you on top by the Auto Road, the Cog or on foot.
